BeBerkadia Spotlight Series: Maura Spellman

August 4, 2022

At Berkadia, our success is built upon the talent and hard work of a broad, diversely skilled team.  From analysts to loan closing specialists to managing directors each of our people brings a unique background, perspective and expertise. Their work allows Berkadia to remain a leader in the commercial real estate industry.

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Maura Spellman, who was recently promoted to Associate, on the Philadelphia Investment Sales team.

Describe your role at Berkadia and what’s to come with your promotion.

Prior to being promoted to Associate, I was a Senior Analyst, working as a liaison between our lead producers and the support team, coaching new hires, strategizing on BOV/OM content and process, managing on-market deals, and facilitating in the prospecting of new business. The Philadelphia team has seen significant growth over the past few years and I’m excited to be a part of it!

Now, I’m looking forward to building new client relationships and generating new business, while simultaneously partnering with Matt Stefanski and Zac Pierce to focus on engagement and investment strategy.

What are you most passionate about?

I’m passionate about collaboration and helping others solve problems in a creative way. I’m excited to leverage more of Berkadia’s technology platform, data resources and tools in order to help our clients achieve their investment goals.

How did you get introduced to CRE? Did you choose CRE or did CRE choose you?

While in high school, I met Matt and Zac while working as a golf caddie at a local country club. This piqued my interest to pursue a career in CRE.  While attending Temple University, I worked at a local real estate agency, Govberg Realty, leasing off-campus housing to students. A subsequent internship with EQT Exeter’s Multifamily Development division, helped me to realize that my passion lies with multifamily product and investment sales.

What’s it like being a female in CRE?

Being a female in CRE definitely presents its challenges, but I’ve found it to be extremely rewarding so far. I’ve grown a lot over the past few years and have learned to communicate confidently and effectively to keep up with other producers, both men and women. I’m lucky to be a part of a company like Berkadia with many successful females that have paved the path for females like me just getting started in the industry, as well as an encouraging culture built for all to succeed.

When you’re not helping Berkadia move the industry forward, how do you spend your time?

You can find me spending time with family and friends or attempting to shoot under 100 at Llanerch Country Club while continuing to embarrass myself… and finishing the round with at least a 110 (It’s the effort and positive attitude that counts, right?).
