BeBerkadia Intern Spotlight: Tyler Shoch

June 22, 2023

At Berkadia, our success is built upon the talent and hard work of a broad, diversely skilled team. From analysts to loan closing specialists to managing directors each of our people brings a unique background, perspective and expertise. Their work allows Berkadia to remain a leader in the commercial real estate industry.

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Tyler Shoch, an intern in the servicing department, to learn more about his internship at Berkadia, what stood out about Berkadia when interviewing, and what he has learned about himself and his future career, while interning at Berkadia.

Can you tell us about yourself and describe your internship at Berkadia so far?

I am a rising senior at Bloomsburg University, majoring in Business Management. My dad, Brian Shoch, actually works in the servicing department at Berkadia and introduced me to the world of commercial real estate. So far, my internship here at Berkadia has been great. Immediately upon starting, I felt very welcomed, and everyone has been so kind and supportive throughout my experience. I feel comfortable asking questions, because I know that the people here would genuinely love to help me grow and succeed.

Were you always interested in CRE? If not, how did you get into CRE?

To be honest, I was not always interested in commercial real estate. My Dad introduced me to the world of commercial real estate, the role the servicing department has, and that’s what interested me. In the past, I’ve been more interested in residential real estate, but I’m excited to learn more about CRE this summer.

What stood out about Berkadia when you were interviewing for your internship role?

While interviewing at Berkadia, what stood out the most was the emphasis on the culture and the people. It truly is a supportive community, and it makes working here so much better and easier when you don’t have to worry about how you are going to be treated or to ask questions. Everyone here is so generous and understanding and is willing to help and support me.

What advice would you have for students looking to get involved in CRE and landing an internship at Berkadia?

The advice I would give to someone looking to get into commercial real estate is to take the risk. I didn’t know too much about CRE before coming to Berkadia, but as the weeks have gone on, I gained more knowledge about the business and furthered my education in CRE. Something else I would suggest is to network. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Everyone is here to help you and encourage you to do your best. Lastly, be a hard worker and don’t forget to be yourself; have confidence that you will succeed, and you will. Keep your eyes on where you want to be in the next five to ten years and put your mind to it.

What has your internship at Berkadia taught you about your future career or yourself?

Something that this job has taught me is that I am not going to know everything right away, and that it is okay. Some of the employees have worked at Berkadia for over 15 years and some over 30! There is a lot of information and knowledge that goes into this career and that it will take time, patience, and hard work to get to where some of these other people are.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Overall, Berkadia is the place to be. They have a fantastic culture and great management teams. They genuinely care about their clients and their employees, and it makes working here a lot of fun!
