July 18, 2023

At Berkadia, our success is built upon the talent and hard work of a broad, diversely skilled team. From analysts to loan closing specialists to managing directors each of our people brings a unique background, perspective and expertise. Their work allows Berkadia to remain a leader in the commercial real estate industry.

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Laura Horton, a mortgage banking intern, to learn more about her internship at Berkadia, what stood out about Berkadia when interviewing, and what she has learned about herself and her future career, while interning at Berkadia.

Can you tell us about yourself and describe your internship at Berkadia so far?

I attended Clemson University last year but will be transferring to Ohio State University this fall for my junior year. I am from the Cleveland, Ohio area and outside of my internship I enjoy skiing and snowboarding and have been riding horses competitively for 12 years. My internship at Berkadia so far has been great! I am interning in the Cleveland office which has been enjoyable because of the close relationships I have made with my coworkers.

Were you always interested in CRE? If not, how did you get into CRE?

I have always been interested in real estate but was never sure whether I wanted to go into residential or commercial. Both industries are exciting, and I wanted to learn more about both. I had the opportunity to intern at another commercial real estate firm in the past which really got me into CRE and led me to Berkadia.

What stood out about Berkadia when you were interviewing for your internship role?

Since I had the opportunity to work at a different commercial real estate company in the past, I was eager to see a different side of the business. Berkadia seemed like an overall wonderful place to work. During the interview process I could tell that they had a fun and enthusiastic work environment that I wanted to be a part of.

What advice would you have for students looking to get involved in CRE and landing an internship at Berkadia?

The best advice I would have for students looking to get involved in CRE would be to make connections and start relationships with people in the industry you’re most interested in. If you meet someone who works for a company that sparks your interest, don’t be afraid to reach out and find out more about their role and ask questions about the company itself!

What has your internship at Berkadia taught you about your future career or yourself?

Over time, the more I am here, the more interested I become in mortgage banking and investment sales. Specifically, multifamily housing—it’s kind of perfect because it is a blend of residential and commercial real estate!

Anything else you’d like to add?

I have had an amazing experience interning here and I hope everyone who is at least slightly interested in Berkadia applies for the internship.
