July 25, 2022

At Berkadia, our success is built upon the talent and hard work of a broad, diversely skilled team. From graphic designers to loan closing specialists to product designers, each of our people brings a unique background, perspective and expertise. Their work allows Berkadia to remain a leader in the commercial real estate industry.

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on McKenna Koenig, Intern – Investment Sales, who sits in our Phoenix office, to learn more about her internship experience, how she found Berkadia and advice she’d give to others looking to intern at Berkadia.

Describe your internship at Berkadia, what department you’re in and how you’re liking the program so far.

I work on the investment sales team in Phoenix. I started interning here in June and love the atmosphere. Everyone is so friendly and outgoing, which instantly made me feel a part of the team from day one.

What is your major in school and how did you find out about Berkadia?

My major is business administration with a minor in real estate development at the University of Southern California. During my sophomore year of college, I connected with a few people and one of them recommended that I apply for an internship here. They connected me with the Phoenix IS office at Berkadia and the rest is history.

Were you always interested in CRE? If not, how did you get into CRE?

Admittedly, I was not always interested in CRE, but I got into it by connecting with people who work in the industry. After learning what they do on a daily basis, I became intrigued and knew that this was going to lead me to sustainable real estate development, which is what I’m really passionate about.

What stood out about Berkadia when you were interviewing for your internship role?

During my interview, the importance of culture and relationships at Berkadia was brought up multiple times. These two qualities are very important to me because I knew that I would be busy with work and getting deals closed, but I wanted to have good relationships with the people around me.

What has your internship at Berkadia taught you about your future career or yourself and how can other students prepare themselves to land an internship at Berkadia?

Personally, I’ve learned that it takes me awhile to grasp new concepts or terms in an industry I wasn’t completely familiar with, so I tend to ask a lot of questions. But, I’d encourage others to make it a goal to ask questions during your time here as well, because asking questions will only take your knowledge to the next level and make you more successful in the long run.

I’d say to get an internship at Berkadia, connect with as many people as you can. You never know who knows who in this industry and you want to get exposed to CRE or real estate in general in any way possible.
