Matthew Tu is a Senior Director leading Berkadia’s JV Equity & Structured Capital Group. He focuses on raising equity and structured capital from domestic and international qualified institutional capital sources. He helps match Berkadia clients with the right equity sources for real estate projects in some of the U.S.’s most dynamic markets, ranging from East Coast to West Coast. He has strong connectivity to capital sources in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Working to bring partners together from different parts of the country and the world, Matthew has an uncanny ability to capitalize complex deals in a timely manner to help his clients grow their businesses.
Since launching the JV Equity & Structured Capital Group in 2019, Matthew has capitalized over $7 billion in transactions across more than 130 property deals, including over 26,000 multifamily/build-for-rent units and student housing beds across 26 states. Prior to joining Berkadia, Matthew was a director at Fosun Group, China’s largest private equity firm, and Fidelidade, one of Portugal’s largest insurance companies, where he was responsible for investing and managing their $2 billion real estate portfolio in the U.S.
Born and raised in China, Matthew is native in Mandarin and fluent in English. He has a deep understanding of Asian cultures and specializes in assisting Asian clients and capital groups in expanding their businesses in the U.S. Matthew is also a CFA Charter Holder.
